116 More Days
Today I am another year older. And with that
milestone comes the realization that another year
closer to death means one less year left in which
to achieve some measure of success with my writing.
The scribblings I've posted here in this daily
column will not earn me millions, nor thousands,
nor even spare change. But whether this column
serves as a springboard to paid assignments or just
a daily workout to keep my creativity toned, its
usefulness has remained apparent during the hiatus
of the past month and a half.
During my time off from this column, I've
continued diving at Sea World, selling flowers at
Proflowers.com and writing trivia for NTN. I've
also kept my finger on the slightly quickening
pulse of the job market. In short, not much has
changed. But I have been preoccupied by a move to
San Diego's East County, and have only just got my
home office back up and running.
Throughout this time "off," as it were, I've
felt an increasing urge to get my fingers back on
the keyboard. Whether it was just missing the daily
exercise of writing after composing a column for
the first seven months of this year, or a deeper
drive to start writing every day again, it quickly
became clear that my abandonment of this daily
column had to be temporary. The urge to write is
too strong. Too many current issues demand an
opinion. Life is too short to waste any more
time.
So, to put it in two words, "I'm back." I've got
116 more days till 2004, so if you'll stick with me
this time, I'll take you on through to the end of
the year with 116 more opinionated commentaries,
insightful observations, philosophical musings and
anything else that inspires me in the weeks and
months to come.
